“This will be the first tour I’ve ever done with a full band,” says Old Man Luedecke. “Mostly made up of the album band from working at Montreal’s Hotel2Tango with Mike O’Brien (Vic Chestnutt, Sin and Swoon) and Jamie Thompson (Socalled, Islands), and rounded out with Brian Kobayakawa on bass (Serena Ryder, Creaking Tree). I thought it’d be really nice to recreate the calypso vibes of the new record. We performed the record in Montreal to great success this past Sunday at the Festival Folk Sur Le Canal and it felt so good to be on the festival main stage with a fuller sound for the afternoon easing in to the evening. It’s pretty exciting to put old and new songs into the band context and bring the sound not just of this record but all of my records on to the road this fall. It just seems like time for this new fun.”

Easy Money picks up where Old Man Luedecke’s award-winning Domestic Eccentric (2015) leaves off: four years farther down the road, dreaming about his ship coming in, still a parent but now grappling with the newness of middle age, dad jokes, love for an abiding partner, the death of a parent, along with some calypso-feeling local Nova Scotia history thrown in for good measure. Composition and recording were both begun at the Banff Centre’s songwriter-in-residence program. It was there that Luedecke met the album’s producer Howard Bilerman of Montreal’s famed Hotel2Tango studio where the album was eventually recorded. The two hit it off when Luedecke composed “Easy Money” on the tracking floor on the first day of the program. Desperate for something worthy to use in his recording time, Luedecke channeled a traditional Christmas number he knew from a Harry Belafonte record and sang largely improvised verses into a winning tune that is sure to be a modern classic: “Oh yes I need it, Oh yes I want it, I dream about easy, I dream about Easy money.” (Don’t we all.) 

The further nine new original compositions and two covers run a modern storytelling line from the fifties folk and calypso boom into the everyday of tangible middle life. Guest appearances by long-time collaborator and Grammy award-winning Tim O’Brien, Afie Jurvanen of Bahamas, and Fats Kaplin (Jack White, John Prine) add piquant accents to the impeccable playing of Luedecke and a crack Montreal studio band of Mike O’Brien, Joshua Toal and Jamie Thompson.

The album begins with three upbeat incantations of what is surely the beginnings of a mid-life crisis (Dad Jokes? Wakeup Call, come on!) then moves to two songs musing about death; both inspired in part and in different ways, by the passing of Luedecke’s father, the passing of Leonard Cohen and current politics and the death of truth. There are two island-themed numbers that imagine a laid-back life in the local un-tropical paradise of the Canadian Maritimes. Then comes a country song with killer fiddling and harmony singing by Tim O’Brien, a dance number of frightful worry and then a cover of Nana Mouskouri’s French language cover of Bob Dylan’s topical apocalyptic plaint, “Hard Rain’s Gonna Fall”. This is followed by a traditional sea shanty about a mermaid and a shipwreck. The album closer, “‘I Skipped a Stone”, is the most beautiful song about hoping your wife will pick up the phone. The song is made all the sweeter by the special appearance of Bahamas’ playing and singing, to close out Luedecke’s sixth full length studio album.

Old Man Luedecke is the recording and performing name of Christopher Luedecke, 2 time JUNO and multi East Coast Music award-winner, and Polaris Music Prize nominee from Chester, Nova Scotia. Since 2004 he has travelled the world playing festivals, theatres and clubs. He delights his audiences with his heart-felt command of the stage. Plus, his inspired banjo playing and wry storytelling cut to the heart of normal/extraordinary experience itself. Born and raised in Toronto, Luedecke followed Thoreauvian and romantic notions to Canada’s Yukon where he fell in love and started composing folk songs with a banjo. Since 2005, he has lived rurally on the south shore of Nova Scotia in Canada’s music-rich Maritime provinces. He has had major appearances at Canadian, Australian and UK festivals and has performed with the likes of Feist, Bahamas, Tim O’Brien, and Rose Cousins. He has built a name and a following that has been uncompromisingly unique and is now firmly established in the top echelon of Canadian folk artists. As the Vancouver Folk Festival says, “He is a musical singularity to be savoured and shared.”

The Stanfields get right to the point in the first lines of the first song on their new album, Limboland: “A line was drawn in the sand by a fool with a big stick and tiny hands/He promised a wall, talked about greatness and dared to speak for me.” That has the band fired up, and answering back big-time, plain-speaking, and plain-rocking: “I’m not afraid of the world,” comes the answer. The Stanfields are back, and ready to sing out loud and clear.

“There’s so much going on in the world, there’s so much uncertainty, I think it’s important that we’re speaking in a really clear voice,” says lead singer and songwriter Jon Landry. Limboland is the fifth album for the Halifax-based band, which sees them take an unflinching look at the negative forces that threaten rights and liberties for all, while doing it all with their trademark swirl of guitars, pounding drums, fiddle and rowdy energy.

No, it’s not political, it’s simply trying to be reasonable, like most of us want. “It’s not just Trump, or Rupert Murdoch, it’s Justin Trudeau and others too, everybody’s just grinding their axe, and we’re not listening to each other,” says Landry. “People are scared to have an opinion lest they be drawn and quartered on social media. The extremist dummies speak the loudest, meanwhile everybody else is in the middle, holding a more moderate view. I like to think that’s where we are, we don’t particularly bang on a drum one side or the other, I like to think we’re in the realm of common sense.” 

In other words, screw politics and profit, let’s worry about the big picture: “Your flag won’t save you anymore/keep the ocean from rising up and washing away the shore.” Strong advice, but at the same time, some of the most exciting and memorable music the group has ever made.

This is the first album for the group since 2015’s Modem Operandi, and the first to be recorded with the two newest members of the band, fiddler Calen Kinney and bass player Dillan Tate. “Bringing the new guys into the band really gave myself and Jmac (guitar player Jason MacIsaac) and Murph (drummer Mark Murphy) the license to take a stop and reflect on what we had done musically up to this part,” says Landry. “To say okay, let’s go full-circle here, let’s harness these young guys’ energy to be okay doing three minute songs again, and be forthright about what we’re saying instead of trying to mask it behind some kind of artsy facade. Let’s be comfortable with who we are.” As fans of The Stanfields’ dynamic live show know, that means bringing a message, and bringing the noise. “Our thing has always been, since day one as a band, trying to find that sweet spot where entertainment and art can co-exist,” says Landry.

You’d never call The Stanfields traditional, but being from Nova Scotia, they can’t help soaking up those influences, especially the storytelling. “It’s in my blood,” confirms Landry. “Somebody told me that I sound like I write songs from 100 years ago, which is a fantastic compliment for my sake. John Prine has been my hero since I was a kid, but I also liked Nirvana.” Those East Coast images show up in ‘Lantern In The Window.’ “That song’s about making sure that we actually have a place in our hearts and our minds for people who are homeless or people who are being repressed. It’s sort of a warning shot, if we continue down this path, our civil liberties are going to be degraded.” Another highlight is ‘Total Black,’ which features Celtic duo Cassie and Maggie MacDonald, winners of this year’s Traditional Album of the Year at the Canadian Folk Music Awards. Maggie joined Landry for shared lead vocals, while Cassie played twin fiddles with Calen.

The Stanfields have been road-testing the new songs and are thrilled with the reception. “We have the Blacktop Ball festival that we do every year on the North Shore of Nova Scotia in August, and the first night we played the record front to back,” says Landry. “This is the party faithful showing up for the event, and it went over really well. We’ve been playing them here and there and they’ve been going over gangbusters.”

Born in Mississauga, Ontario, Ten Kills The Pack is a project that was shaped and raised in the city of Toronto. Its poetic focused material is put forth by singer/songwriter, Sean Sroka; a musician deriving from multiple bands, genres, and touring projects that have carved through the eastern coasts of Canada. Ten Kills The Pack, as described by Seanʼs most biased friend and fan, Dave: “He lives in those moments, those real conversations about adolescent fears, growing up and faltering relationships. Ten Kills the Pack is for every late night bar dweller, every person unsure about their “path” and for every introspective human being overanalyzing their life choices. Itʼs what myself and others have always connected with his music so easily. Drawing from his all-time influences such as Stan Rogers, Dylan, The National, or Laura Marling, Sroka is a modern day poet, commenting on what it means to be a complex human in the modern age.”

A native of Burlington, Ontario, singer-songwriter Bianca Bernardi released her debut self-titled EP in the Summer of 2014 for which she received two Hamilton Music Award nominations. A traveller as much as an artist, Kim Churchill has lived on the road for years, but it was no longer enough just to pass through; for Kim it was time to show that world in his songs. After The Sun, the warm, loping first single from a new project where each song taps into the people and environments of some of his favourite parts of the world, is Kim showing the value of a new way of thinking, of writing … of living. “I now understand the effect that the whole process of travelling has on the way I write songs and the way I create,” he says, explaining that he travelled this time intending to experience “emotional responses to a constantly changing environment” and allow that to “seep into my creative process, which has been the most liberating part of the last year of writing.” ‘After the Sun’ is the first track from the Berlin EP of this project, finished and recorded in the German capital with the experienced house and hip-hop producer Vincent Kottkamp. “Even the decision to work with Vince was kind of playful,” Kim reveals, “to not try so hard, just go in, have fun, make the music, don’t get anxious if he throws in an electronic sound that you feel is not you. Just give room to exist and have fun.” While Berlin is a city known for its buildings, culture and nightlife, it was the areas where the ‘built’ and ‘natural’ sides of Berlin collide and connect that drove the song. “It started out as a way to contrast the natural and the man-made, but as we started searching the city and finding things, we noticed that there were so many wonderful examples of nature jumping into buildings, re-taking over what it originally owned,” Kim explains. Just as the lyrics of “After the Sun” play with the idea that it’s a futile exercise to try and chase the sun, Kim saw the way nature swallowed disused buildings, art and colour and life finding their way back into these sterile, concrete structures. “That’s really inspiring for me,” Kim says, “that the beautiful creative side to our DNA, that we just don’t understand, finds a way to come out again and again.”

Montreal’s dark pearl Thus Owls, aka Swedish-Canadian couple Erika and Simon Angell, have since their debut in 2009 become an original and independent voice on the alternative music scene. Simon’s harshly charismatic guitar sound blends with the urgency of Erika’s vocals to create a sound that bends and stretches their unusual compositions into ever newer and surprising shapes. It is in the constantly shifting scenery that Thus Owls find their sound. Their soulful adventurousness and musical fluency borrows from every corner of popular music, while pushing boundaries beyond any hackneyed genre classification.  Thus Owls released their fourth full-length album The Mountain That We Live Upon in September 2018. Nine tracks, composed for four guitars, drums and voice, that questions creation from an artistic as well as a biological point of view. What does motherhood, parenthood and artistry mean and what happens in the wake of our choices? From a jazz oriented, avant-garde rock with chanted poetry, one version and one reality takes shape. The unmistakable sound of Erika and Simon Angell carries and brings forward this larger version of Thus Owls into a dynamic, open and free sound where love stands undoubted.  For their fourth full-length album, Thus Owls has collaborated with a seven piece large band. The core trio of Erika, Simon and  drummer Samuel Joly (Marie-Pierre Arthur, Fred Fortin), is surrounded by three additional guitar players; Laurel Sprengelmeyer (Little Scream), Nicolas Basque (Plants and Animals), Michael Feuerstack (The Luyas) and bass player Marc-André Landry (Matt Holubowski). The record also features, Jason Sharp on bass saxophone and Emil Strandberg from Sweden on trumpet. The full band was recorded live off the floor, at Hotel2Tango in Montreal, to capture the passion that exists in their powerful and dynamic live performances. The new album will be the first release on Erika and Simon’s new independent label and artistic home, For The Living And The Dead.

Freedom Baby was formed in June of 2017 by Eric and Brianna who started recording songs in their bedroom. They released their first single, “Video Daydream”, in August 2017 to positive reviews, premiering on Indie88.  For their first EP they enlisted the help of more musicians and expanded their roster from two to eight, switching from the electronic bedroom experimentation to a more straightforward indie rock sound with elements of experimental progressive rock. How You’ll Grow was released in March of 2018 to critical acclaim. Single “When We Go” premiered on EARMILK.  In May 2018, they released a second EP/single, the 15-minute indie rock opera entitled “I Want To Give” which saw the band perfecting the blend of experimental indie rock they started on their debut EP.

Lydia Persaud is a Toronto-born & raised soul artist. Lydia’s sound expands the boundaries of soul to include both folk and jazz, styles that have been foundational to her musical growth. Lydia attended the rigorous jazz program at Humber School of Music, where she won the Oscar Peterson Jazz Award and connected with fellow members of the folk trio The O’Pears, whom she has been collaborating with for the past seven years. Working in these styles honed Lydia’s mastery of sophisticated vocal harmony and blend, leading her to become an in-demand vocalist. Lydia has supported such icons as Gordon Lightfoot, David Crosby, and Lee Fields, as well as opened for Serena Ryder, Sarah Harmer, and Joey Landreth. After performing internationally with The O’Pears and Dwayne Gretzky, and backing artists such as Lee Fields, Jill Barber, Royal Wood, Jadea Kelly and Karl Wolf, Lydia has emerged with her own voice in the world of folk-soul.

Raised on a healthy dose of the country music narrative and the spiritual motivation of gospel hymns, Persaud reconnected with her roots on her debut solo EP, 2017’s Low Light. The EP featured some of Canada’s finest musicians such as Robbie Grunwald (Jill Barber, Good Lovelies), Joel Schwartz (Birds of Chicago), Josh Van Tassel (Great Lake Swimmers), and Drew Jurecka (Jill Barber). Persaud‘s follow-up single, “Honey Child”, saw her reunite with Low Light producer Robbie Grunwald, alongside a band consisting of Grunwald (bass/keys), Champagne James Robertson (guitar), Joshua Van Tassel (drums/percussion), and Anh Phung (flute), as well as Joanna Mohammed-Gonzalez and Claire Doyle (vocals). Her debut full-length album, Let Me Show You, drops May 10 on Next Door Records. With Let Me Show You, Lydia draws inspiration from her musical heroes, such as Donny Hathaway, Bill Withers and Carole King, while touching on vital issues that deeply affect her. Her music melds genres while Lydia’s clear message shines through on the power of her unforgettable voice.

 “Soul music has always affected me the most, a soulful conviction on matters of the heart,” says Persaud.  “Voicing struggle or sharing joy and celebration has always been my favourite method of expression.” As a woman of colour from a Canadian-Guyanese-Ukrainian background, Lydia has actively sought to break stereotyped expectations of her identity through her music. She finds it empowering to disrupt assumptions that pigeonhole her in genres such as Folk: “Swaying far from those expectations by writing soul-based songs on the ukulele felt like I was carving out my own space. I always had a love for early country music and storytelling through song, which always kept me close to artists like Shania Twain and Stevie Wonder.”

In the past year Lydia has supported Serena Ryder, Joey Landreth, Donovan Woods, and recently joined Lindi Ortega, Terra Lightfoot & Begonia as a special guest on The Longest Road Show.

“You free yourself when you take away the script,” says Toronto songwriter Charlotte Cornfield. “That’s where this record came from, dismantling patterns and embracing the process.” Cornfield’s third full length, The Shape of Your Name,  arrived in April 2019 via Outside Music imprint Next Door Records. The album has a more honed studio sound than her scrappier 2016 release Future Snowbird and her acclaimed 2011 debut Two Horses, and for good reason: it was recorded in five different sessions over the course of three years. The songs are her strongest and most striking to date — contemplative and contemporary, funny and heart-wrenching — and they’ve got that stuck-in-your-head-for-days quality that Cornfield is known for.

The Shape of Your Name features a star-studded cast of collaborators including (but not limited to) Grammy-winning engineer Shawn Everett, Broken Social Scene members Brendan Canning, Kevin Drew and Charles Spearin, and Montreal songwriter Leif Vollebekk. A denizen of the road since her late teens, the 6-foot-tall musician lives in a state of bemusement. Cornfield has previously shared the stage with the likes of Sun Kil Moon, Lake Street Dive, Ron Sexsmith and Sharon Van Etten. The Globe and Mail says, “Her songwriting is ravenous. Even here, in uneasy happiness, [Cornfield] sounds like she will wolf down her life as fast as she is able. The windfalls, the crises, the concerts, the chance encounters – she’ll sprint through them all, collecting burs. This is work in the tradition of Dylan or Townes Van Zandt.”
